Made at UCCAnnual Art Student Exhibit

May 5 - June 2, 2016

Art students have to be brave. To make art is to learn new skills, to think in the abstract, risk failure, and savor successes. Each year, the Art Department and Gallery at Umpqua Community College offers all students who have taken fine art classes during the current academic year the chance to display their work and be selected to win one of three Juror’s Choice Awards.

This exhibit is always a favorite of Fine Art Department faculty as it allows students to share and celebrate the results of their hard work with the wider campus community and residents of Douglas County. The works featured will be pieces selected by this year’s juror. The juror will have the exciting and difficult task of choosing works by students who studied in the following courses: Basic Design 1, 2, and 3, Photography, Painting, Watercolor, Drawing, and Ceramics. This year’s exhibit will also feature graphic design work by Kayla Towers, who is completing her certificate in Visual Communications.

This year’s juror is Clara Lanyi. She is a recent transplant to Douglas County with extensive knowledge in ceramics and sculpture. Lanyi holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts (focusing on Sculpture and Printmaking) from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics from Alfred University, and a Master’s in Ceramics from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Lanyi has attended countless workshops with well-respected ceramic artists and was an artist in residence at The Clay Studio of Missoula Montana. She currently owns a studio where she produces her functional wares in Roseburg, OR.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 5, from noon - 1:30 pm and Juror’s Choice Awards will be announced at 12:30 pm. The reception is FREE and open to the public.
