Umpqua Community College expects nearly 200 new students to participate in a record-breaking spring new student orientation on Friday. Typically, spring orientations have had fewer than 75 participants. New student orientation will be held Friday, March 27 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The welcome will be held in the dining room at the Campus Center, then the students will be divided into six smaller groups. Over the course of the day, each group will cycle through six workshops, including student success strategies, financing college, UCCLife, Angel and hosted online classes, term-by-term planning and using the catalog, campus tour and photo IDs. A free pizza lunch will be provided.
“We’ve made changes to the program over the last few years which include creating a community education credit that students are able to register for,” said UCC Student Life director Marjan Coester. “Thanks to the hard work of the advising and counseling staff, new student orientation is automatically included in their schedule of classes.”
Approximately 40 percent of the new students are enrolled as pursuing career technical fields, 60 percent are general studies.
