Winchester - Centerstage at Umpqua Community College presents two pre-show discussions about the history and plot behind “Judge Dunson’s Secret,” an original musical in honor of Oregon’s 150th birthday. This is an original script by John Granholm with the music and lyrics by Jason Heald, both instructors at UCC. The musical is adapted from a novel of the same title by Oregon author and equal rights advocate Abigail Scott Duniway.

A discussion will be held on March 13 at 6:30 p.m. in the Whipple Art Gallery on the UCC campus. Dr. Debra Shein, professor at Idaho State University, writer and historian, will talk about Abigail Scott Duniway who wrote the novel that inspired the novel. Scriptwriter John Granholm will present a historical view of the time period.

On March 20, UCC faculty members Jason Heald, Dean Remick and John Granholm will discuss the writing of the music, lyrics and script and the inner-workings of the performance.

This will occur at 6:30 p.m. in the Art Gallery, just before the premier of the play in Centerstage.

Tickets for the performances are available at Hanson Jewelers and While Away Books in Roseburg, Books Gallery in Sutherlin, UCC Fine Arts Center, online at tickets.umpqua.edu, and at the door (if available).

The Whipple Art Gallery is currently featuring “She Flies with Her Own Wings: Art in Celebration of Oregon,” an exhibit of historic photographs of women Oregonians. This exhibit is sponsored by the American Association of University Women and is also in conjunction with other campus activities in celebration of Oregon’s 150th birthday. The gallery is open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. or by appointment and is free to the public. For more information, call 440-4692.

Disability related accommodations are available on request. Call 440-4691. For more information on this and future shows, call the Centerstage at Umpqua Community College Hotline, 440-7726. The college is located at 1140 Umpqua College Road in Roseburg, Oregon.
