Winchester— The Art Gallery at Umpqua Community College’s Whipple Fine Arts Center is hosting “She Flies with Her Own Wings: Art in Celebration of Oregon” from February 6 through March 20. She Flies with Her Own Wings is an exhibit of historic photographs of women Oregonians. These images are drawn from archives at the Oregon Historical Society and Douglas County Museum. Women’s literature and artistic achievements will also be highlighted.

It’s clear that women in Oregon are made of sturdy stock. Those who followed the dreams of the westward movement were instrumental in making those dreams visible, building communities and carving a place for themselves and their families out of the wilderness. From cowgirls trick-riding at the Pendleton Round-Up, through Rose Festival Queens and coffee-shop waitresses, women have filled a colorful variety of roles throughout Oregon’s history.

This exhibit is sponsored by the American Association of University Women and is in conjunction with other campus activities in celebration of Oregon’s 150th birthday. The gallery is open Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. or by appointment. Free admission. For more information, call 440-4692.
